A complete Google Business Profile: the one-afternoon checklist

Most listings lose out not for lack of reviews but for empty fields. Google scores profile completeness, and every filled field is another relevance signal. Below is the order worth working in — from the fields that move the most to the ones that are cosmetics.

The primary category decides everything

The primary category is the only field that decides which queries you compete in at all. Switching from "Barber shop" to "Hair salon" can move a listing onto an entirely different set of phrases. Pick the one that describes your main source of revenue, not the broadest one. local ranking factors.

Additional categories carry less weight but widen the services shown on the profile. Three accurate ones beat eight random ones.

Description, hours, photos — in that order

The description allows 750 characters. The first sentence should carry what the customer is looking for, because that is the part shown in results. Fill in opening hours together with holidays — Google flags listings with stale hours and lowers their visibility. replying to reviews.

Photos are the most commonly skipped element with real impact. The minimum: exterior, interior, team, product. Refreshed quarterly, they keep the profile reading as active.

What you cannot skip

Address verification is often the longest step and there is no way around it. Start there so the rest of the work is not queued behind it.

A complete profile does not guarantee the top spot. An incomplete one guarantees you will not get it.
